Answering to improvements for Iranian women In Shah times.

Q - From KianB : I know your aunt was working very hard to improve the situation of Iranian women and children on a legislative level both in parliament and the government. Shah and the rest of his cabinet were also busy building a very strong road for development of Iran as one of the best countries in the region. The immediate results were easily seen in late 60’s and 70’s where Iran was modernized. That, in its turn, led to the revolt by youth in 1979. Shah was remembered as a ‘dictator’ and his economical, political and social plans were in ruin.

How do you think the situation of Iranians in general and particularly Iranian women was improved in that time and how much did that take? What were the most significant improvements for Iranian women? And on which points we still needed to work?

A - When you work for advancement of women it does not matter what country or under what regime you do that. Of course it matters if there is a Queen Farah there who encourages this or Princess Ashraf helping women, as opposed to a regime like Khamaneis who is having mandatory hijab and encouraging women to stay in the kitchen and say that women can only go to heaven thru their husbands!

I hear mixed stuff about Princess Ashraf but would like to think she was for advancement of women, rather than the opposite. I also should mention that from Queen Farah I always heard movements for women and nothing of the opposite.
In fact there was a project called Yakhchiabad project and heard that Queen’s mother would visit it ,thou Dr.Parsay was running this project and it was for 5000 students and for the first time the idea of co-ed was introduced there..

Also, Dr. Parsay had another project that I really liked and that was to build thousands of new schools and encouraged the public to dedicate a school for each section of different towns. I remember my grand pa dedicated one school on the road to sea side,(North of Iran) and it was one room and a blackboard and chairs. If anybody remembers the name of that school email me as the least to do to keep her good works alive.

I walked in there proudly couple of times, could it be Foomeh? Not sure.At any rate for improvement of women’s situation she put so many women at work in education department, thou some had to reject it due to their husband’s place of work and location. She created a lot of opportunities for women. What hurt her was the free nutrition program that she had and was introduced for the first time and in there she had to have contracts with here and there, and those companies started to steal money for more benefit. It was a corrupted system specially in Bazar and that hurt Shah’s reputation too.

But in the end as a woman in those times coming forward and work in an atmosphere of all men needed courage which my aunt had. Also Khomeinei from the first moment that she was appointed, made a vow to execute her ,since Khomeini never wanted to have strong women around him and that is where his philosophy of mandatory hijab come from.

As for how the situaion of Iranian women improved, you can see that number of women in Majilis increased, the barrier for appointing a woman for sensitive jobs were broken . All in all the outlook for women and her capability in holding a high position job in Iran was improved by appointing Dr. Parsay, a woman, a physician, a teacher and a mother to that job. She stood strong to the end, as her hand written last will hours before her execution shows, in her last moments whe was strong with no shaking of hands or loosing concentration. I will post her will later.

We need more women like Dr. Parsay and her mother Mrs. Fakhr Afagh Parsay to be taken as role model to make a better world for women and men all over the world.
